Replace Your Roof and Plan for Solar Together

A roof replacement is the one time an existing home can take a solar roof without waste, because the old covering is coming off regardless. If you've also been thinking about solar, it's worth treating the two as a single job and pricing a roof that generates against a new roof with panels added.

Good candidates

A roof that's reached the end of its life. An owner who wants solar and would prefer not to see racking. Roof faces that get sun for most of the day. And enough lead time to plan, which in practice means you're not replacing it this season.

Poor candidates

A roof that's still sound. A roof that has to be replaced right now because water is coming in. In those cases, go ahead with a conventional roof and look at panels separately.

The sequence

  1. Send us the address, some photos or measurements, and when the roof needs doing.
  2. We review the roof and the location.
  3. You receive a layout and a quotation, subject to local availability and technical review.
  4. Permits, electrical inspection and utility connection follow your local process.
  5. The old roofing is removed, the deck is checked, and the new roof and electrical equipment are installed.
  6. Final inspection and connection.

Best for

  • Roofs that are due for replacement
  • Homeowners who want solar without racking
  • Roof faces with good sun

May not be best for

  • Roofs with years of life left
  • Urgent replacements
  • Replacements with no time to plan

Questions we get asked

Can it go over my existing shingles?

It's installed as a new roof covering. What has to come off is confirmed in the technical review.

Should I replace a roof that's still good to get this?

No. Look at conventional panels.

What time of year would the work happen?

That depends on where you are and on the installer's schedule. It's part of the conversation once your project has been reviewed.
